JCK Tucson hosted so many talented designers and amazing collections, but three designers took home the coveted first-place wins in this year’s JCK Tucson Design Challenge. In partnership with Uncommon Goods, Overstock and O, The Oprah Magazine, our three judges selected winners based on their respective criteria.

The winners were Lee Jones Collection for Uncommon Goods, Lord Jewelry for Overstock and Rock and Gems Jewelry for O, The Oprah Magazine. Here are the pieces that captured the judges’ attention!

Lee Ann Jones of Lee Jones Collection told us how not only did it mean a lot for her to win, but how the Design Challenge gave her the ability to tell her story and cultivate relationships with others.

“Entering the Design Challenge gave me a platform to tell the story behind the Fairy Dust Collection, as well as showcase what differentiates my designs,” Jones said. “Winning first place in the Uncommon Goods Design Challenge and third in the O Magazine Design Challenge was a huge honor and an amazing opportunity to meet and really connect with industry leaders and designers.  I left JCK Tucson inspired by the Design Challenge experience and am looking forward to continued growth, both personally and as a designer, as these relationships blossom.”

Our Favorite Trends As Seen On JCK Events Instagram

To say the jewels we saw at JCK Tucson were swoon-worthy is an understatement! There were so many gems and handcrafted pieces to drool over on the show floor. Think mixed metals, peridot, enamel, opals, jade/rubies and 3D printing! Our new friends Paris and Zoë over at Get Rocked thought so too, which was obvious when they took over our Instagram account on day two!

After a lot of deliberation, we rounded up our top ten favorite trends on the JCK Events Instagram page. We’re bringing those trends to you Insiders right here, so take a look below to see what we can’t stop thinking about from the show!

Key Takeaways From Tucson’s Fireside Chat Speakers

Key Takeaways From Tucson’s Fireside Chat Speakers

Inspiration is one of the most crucial parts of the show, especially in this ever-changing jewelry scene. Our fireside chats provided some much-appreciated and needed insight to everyone in attendance no matter which facet of the industry they identified with.

The 2017 Fireside Chats, presented as a part of the JCK Talks education series, kicked off with an informal chat between Teresa Frye of Techform Advanced Casting and John Atencio whose namesake brand made its return to the trade show circuit with a JCK Tucson debut. The conversation – moderated by JCK Magazine’s Victoria Gomelsky – shed some light on the important relationship between jewelry casters and designers, the rising popularity in 3D Printing, and how to stay relevant in an ever-changing industry.

The second day put a spotlight on Contemporary Jewelry Design Group and American Jewelry Design Council Executive Director Marylouise Sirignano Lugosch, who moderated a panel of four esteemed CJDG designers. Alishan Halebian, Aaron Henry, Rona Fisher and Pamela Froman. This all-star design collective shared their thoughts on today’s jewelry industry including marketing and selling products, trends and how established designers keep their lines fresh.

The final chat with Patricia Faber of Aaron Faber Gallery and Peter Schmid of Atelier Zobel ended Tucson’s education series with some key takeaways on the intricacies of the designer / retailer relationship. The pair shared advice with budding designers on how to smartly align your brand with the right retailers, building a symbiotic partnership, and the importance of having a presence at tradeshows.

Celebrating the Industry at Gems After Dark

Celebrating the Industry at Gems After Dark

When in Tucson, you have to make time for sunset celebrations, tequila toasts and stargazing! That’s exactly what Gems After Dark had to offer. Everyone in attendance could let loose and relax after a busy day of work on the show room floor.

Gems After dark had a successful partnership with Women’s Jewelry Association, American Gem Society and Gen-Next Jewelers. Over 400 industry professionals were in attendance for the event. Highlighting the night was the much-anticipated Passion Project- a series of speedy presentations about the presenter’s passions outside of the jewelry world! It was a great way for members of the industry to learn about the varying interests of their peers!

Other activities included lawn games such as corn hole, stargazing and unlimited food and cocktails. It was the cherry on top of a perfect evening spent in the Tucson desert!
