JCK Las Vegas Announces Design Center's First-Ever Kickstarter Class

Apr 07, 2016

Norwalk, CT (April 7, 2016) — JCK has announced the students that make up its first-ever Kickstarter class—a new component of the re-imagined Design Center that will propel the next generation of designers to the industry. The winners, seven students from seven top jewelry and design colleges, will make their debut at JCK Las Vegas this June. The inaugural Kickstarter Class includes: Maneli Sarmadi, Savannah College of Art & Design; Sophia Chai, Georgian College; Katherine Dannenberg, Rochester Institute of Technology; Olivia Shih, California College of the Arts; Vicky Lew, Central St. Martins; Lizz Roberts, FIDM; and Lisa Krulasik, Pratt Institute. JCK Las Vegas takes place Friday, June 3 – Monday, June 6 at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

The Kickstarter program is just one of many new elements that will come to define the Design Center in 2016 and beyond. The newly located (moved to Bayside, Level 1) and revamped open floorplan concept now has three distinct groupings as part of its new Exhibitor Evolution Model—Kickstarter, Rising Stars, and Resident Designers. Kickstarter will be the first step* for the lucky few who know their passion and are actively pursuing it at the collegiate level. The program, led by a Design Advisory Board comprised of retailers and industry influencers, selects seven designers from participating schools based on their applications and predicted viability in the current marketplace. The prize, an opportunity to exhibit in the Design Center at JCK as part of the first Kickstarter Class, includes a complimentary showcase space and mentorship from the larger design community.

"We are extremely excited about the new Design Center and the Exhibitor Evolution Model, which will be a pathway to success for emerging designers," said Katie Dominesey, Industry Vice President, JCK. "Not only do we have more Rising Stars, 21 have been chosen through a tough vetting process, but our Kickstarter phase is essentially capturing these designers in their infancy and bringing them up through the system. Our Resident Designers, brands such as Sydney Lynch and Michael John Jewelry, have paved the way for designer talent and shine as beacons of the Design Center. These veterans will undoubtedly have a hand in mentoring the future generations and benefiting from their influence as well. We couldn't be happier with the way the Design Center is shaping up and excited for everyone to see it have its moment." It's an exciting time to be a designer in the JCK Community.

*Kickstarter is not a mandatory first step to exhibiting at the Design Center. Exhibitors can enter at any stage and is based on a juried process and vetted annually. All applicants must be approved by the Design Advisory Board in order to ensure the appropriate product quality and mix.
