Successful JCK Tucson 2019 Reports Quality Attendees and Meaningful Connections: Highlights include Live Gem Cutting, Design Awards and Positive Industry Vibe

Mar 05, 2019

NORWALK, CT (March 5, 2019) — The 2019 JCK Tucson Show continued to make its mark as the destination for quality design innovation during Tucson Gem Weeks through high attendance, design innovation and its signature personalized experience. The event, which took place at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa February 6-9, featured a curated assortment of designers who reported meaningful success in writing business and developing new relationships. The Fireside Chats featuring industry leading retailers, live gem cutting, design awards and relaxed pace in the beautiful Arizona setting created excitement and buzz, while also allowing retailers to shop for more unique and personalized finds for their clientele.

“JCK has an environment that does not exist at other industry events, in which unique designer-buyer relationships can be formed,” says Katie Dominesey, Event Vice President, JCK Tucson. “The process of curating the designers makes all the difference. We actively foster an environment that is conducive to retailers discovering new designers, reconnecting with their established friends/vendors, getting inspiration and doing all of this in a non-pressure, relaxed setting. We avoid subscribing to one aesthetic or price point, yet have curated a selection of 80+ designers who delight and inspire our audience."

Retail owner Jamie Hollier of Balefire Goods states, “JCK Tucson is the hidden gem of the Tucson shows. It is more like a guided experience. Time is my most valuable asset, and while other Tucson shows are immense and at times overwhelming, JCK Tucson saves me time and cuts down on the stress by bringing together a highly curated show with thoughtful recommendations customized to me and my business, all in an unbeatable location.”

JCK Tucson 2019 offered attendees a rich assortment of highly specialized fine jewelry and loose gemstones, technology and services, as well as a schedule of inspiring events, featuring experiential activations, educational talks and networking gatherings.

JCK TUCSON HIGHIGHTS INCLUDED:

Fireside Chats and Education

Powered in partnership with various sponsors and industry organizations, educational and networking events allowed show attendees to build community, share best practices and address a wide variety of topical industry issues. The American Gem Society (AGS) and the Responsible Jewellery Council lead discussions regarding corporate social responsibility, engaging consumers, enhancing loyalty, converting shoppers to buyers, ethical sourcing and editorial/social media trends with guest panelists including Alexis Padis of Padis Jewelry, Lisa Bridge of Ben Bridge, Michael and Denise Richards of Underwood Jewelers, John Carter of Jack Lewis Jewelers and Shane Clark of Glamour Magazine, to name a few.

Live Gem Cutting

Drawing in local Tucson media as well as JCK Tucson attention, world-renowned Gem-Cutter Roger Dery performed two live gem cutting sessions including a 16.10 carat Rhodolite Garnet and an 11.44 carat Aquamarine, both sourced in Malawi. All the stones cut are now available for purchase with all proceeds going to Jewelers for Children (JFC).

"JCK Tucson is the optimum place to showcase vendors who are expressive in their storytelling and have beautiful artistic collections,” states Roger Dery of Roger Dery Gem Design. "It was an honor for me to perform live interactive gemstone cutting demonstrations at the show with two pieces of rough I had sourced last year in East Africa. It was also thrilling for me to watch the show attendees experience live the fusion of science, math, geometry, creativity and craftsmanship that goes into faceting a gemstone. Given the show's focus on the inspiration behind the jewels, JCK Tucson was the perfect place for me to share the journey of these two gemstones.”

Design Awards

The JCK Tucson Design Challenge, a design competition that honors innovative, out-of-the-box designs, presented top honors in two categories:

Retailer Choice Awards – Judged by Scott Saunders of London Jewelers
Industry Choice Awards – Judged by Jen Cullen Williams of Luxury Brand Group and Mark Smelzer of JCK Magazine

In addition, as always, JCK Tucson hosted an impressive and diverse lineup of quality designers, including Alex Sepkus, Brooke Gregson, Dana Bronfman, Dorian & Rose, Enji, K. Mita Design and Suneera. Many new designs made their debut at the show this year, along with all-new collections.

Positive Industry Vibe — Community/Networking

Retail attendees such as Art & Soul Gallery, Eliza Page, London Jewelers, Native, Pave Fine Jewelry, R. Grey Gallery, Uncommongoods.com, Wax Jewelry Design Studio and many others had opportunities to participate in JCK Tucson’s In-Store Experience, sponsored by GoGreen Diamonds and nestled into the show floor. The experience featured different themes to inspire retailers with events that could be replicated in their own store for their local clientele. Creative sessions included a salsa & margarita tasting, custom calligraphy and bracelet making. JCK Tucson attendees also participated in daily happy hours, morning hikes, a Mitakuye Oyasin morning ritual with sage burning and more.

Jamie Kresel, owner of Jewelry Artisans, says, “The JCK Tucson Show is one of the best shows I’ve attended. I loved the intimate and relaxed environment, which really helped to meet with vendors without pressure or distractions. The JCK Team was very helpful in matching us up with new vendors.”

The Women’s Jewelry Association (WJA) established the inaugural WJA Pavilion at JCK Tucson 2019, leveraging the power of the female design community and offering up-and-coming designers an opportunity to showcase their product and connect with retail buyers. Various networking events, sponsored by Gen-Next Jewelers, WJA, Jewelers of America, AGS Young Titleholders and IDCA, inspired meaningful connections and even some mentoring opportunities.

“The energy this year at JCK was very upbeat, and most of my fellow retailer colleagues noted they are coming off a very strong year. Tucson is great chance to connect after the holidays,” says John Carter, President & CEO of Jack Lewis Jewelers and current American Gem Society President. “There were very interesting up-and-coming designers at JCK Tucson, and I enjoyed visiting with old friends I’ve known forever. I will now spend the next 11.5 months counting the days until I can return to the JW Marriott Starr Pass and the JCK Tucson show!”
