Absolutely, Amethyst! A Birthstone For All

Out of the many attributes that make people adore amethyst (much-deservedly so!), it’s difficult to pinpoint the very best thing.

To state the obvious, its beauty is a deep, vivid one, irresistible to purveyors of purple but even likable for those who wouldn’t describe themselves as big fans of the color. Amethyst is sort of the “every gem,” offering something for everyone and every taste, in a stunning range of hues and sometimes even preferred in geode form.

As a geode, amethyst is miraculous. Glittering with crystals against a backdrop of purple, amethyst geodes are often styled in jewelry, but just as often in sensational objects found on bookshelves and mantles. GIA’s gem encyclopedia had this staggering fact to share: “In gem localities like Brazil, amethyst sometimes forms in hollow, crystal-lined geodes so big you can stand in them.”

Rich with beauty but known for its relative affordability, amethyst’s modest price tag is another advantage of this February birthstone. You’ll find the gem in eye-catching cocktail rings and statement earrings, just as you’ll find it in petite stacking rings and studs.

While the finest amethyst appears as a striking purple—often with underlying reddish tones—the gem comes in lovely light lilac and dark shades, as well as in bicolor variations like ametrine, combining the colors of citrine and amethyst.
