The Warm and Sunny Jewels For November Birthdays

November’s birthstones are a perfect combination of earthy and bright, a fair representation of the changing seasons and temperatures.

Citrine, in its golden yellow to brownish orange range, is a variety of quartz that feels spot-on for the season, echoing the colors of the changing leaves. Those colors, though, don’t often occur naturally: While citrine found in nature is incredibly rare, the gem gets its hues from heat treating amethyst.

This treatment helps its affordability factor, making citrine perfect for statement jewels—cocktail rings, large necklaces, and drop earrings. It’s also pretty durable, making it a good choice for everyday jewelry, and, less commonly, engagement rings.

Topaz, November’s other birthstone, has been known to get confused with citrine—at least, in its yellow to orange or brown variations. As a birthstone, topaz is often referred to in its blue state—London blue or Swiss blue topaz. Most blue topaz comes from treating colorless topaz, which is quite plentiful—hence, its reasonable price. But, perhaps confusingly, blue topaz is actually the birthstone for December, while precious topaz—in warmer tones like orange, peach, and yellow—represents November.

Consumers will find the latter of November’s birthstones to cost more, with the orange-red varieties earning top dollar. But such gems are wildly pleasing to the eye, and less commonly seen than other popular gemstone varieties (like its counterpart, citrine).

Whatever their budget or taste, shoppers will find something just right for their November birthday gifts or self-purchases. These examples are just some of the latest available from the brands and designers to showcase at JCK.
