Viva Magenta! Jewels In Pantone’s Color of the Year

When Pantone announced its 2023 Color of the Year as Viva Magenta—“an unconventional color for an unconventional time,” according to the announcement—the jewelry industry responded with a wealth of gems.

It may be that this reddish, purplish shade of almost-pink is unorthodox in categories like home decor and even fashion, but in the jewelry industry, it accounts for some of the best-loved gemstones.

What Pantone calls a “brave, fearless, pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration,” is also how we might describe pink tourmaline, rhodolite, spinel, and sometimes even ruby.

It’s unclear how much impact Pantone’s color selection will have will have across industries, and especially in the jewelry industry, on the demand these particular gemstones. But what we can appreciate from Viva Magenta’s moment in the spotlight is how well-loved these gems already were—a nice reminder that our favorite red-hued stones can serve to inspire happiness, vivacity, passion, and love.
