Catching Up With Lauren Kessler Of Lauren K Fine Jewelry

Based in New York, Lauren K Fine Jewelry—the eponymous brand helmed by Lauren Kessler—is a destination for purveyors of colorful jewelry. They offer pieces that always feel fresh and cutting edge yet timeless. Our visits with Lauren K at the JCK show in Las Vegas always leave us feeling revitalized through the designer’s use of color, the beauty of nature’s influence apparent through details large and small.

Whether it’s opal or turquoise, a delicious watermelon tourmaline, or fancy color sapphire one might be looking for, Lauren K likely have something to offer, and you can bet it’ll be incredibly wearable, and so highly covetable—customers will want it all.

As ever, we can’t wait to see what the brand has in store for this new year. Below, Lauren Kessler gives us a bit of insight as to what we might expect from Lauren K in 2023.

What does Lauren K have planned for 2023, can you share any sneak peeks?

We are going back to our beginnings and visiting some floral motifs that are playful and whimsical.  Our roots were planted in blooms and flowers, and we want to bring them back, but with a new twist. We will play with unexpected color combinations as well.

Which gemstones do you expect to be hot this year? Anything that might surprise us?

Because we are primarily one of a kind, we don't focus on a color trend. We buy stones that speak to us and have personality.  We aren't obligated to buy a certain number of stones in a particular gemstone to mass produce anything, so we just focus on each stone and their unique characteristics. That said, I think emerald, pink tourmaline, aquamarine, and spinel will be strong players.

Do you think that Pantone's annual color announcement has any impact on gemstone demands?

I don't think the Pantone announcement always translates to gemstones. While I am sure it has some impact on fashion in general, I'm not certain it drives demand for a fine jewelry purchase. We always have a lot of pink and magenta in our collection, so we are covered anyhow. It's one of our favorites!

Are we feeling big statement pieces for 2023, small and dainty, or both?

I personally feel like the chunkier pieces are having their moment, and they are still going strong. Timeless, traditional pieces with beautifully cut stones and gorgeous color will always have a place at the table as well, regardless of size. There is a definitive desire for the consumer to have more "personal" jewelry; more unique and intentional, less "like she has." I think statement earrings will be strong as well.

What are your goals for the new year?

2022 was a time of change, new chapters, and closing doors for me. I am optimistic for 2023 and I want the collection to reflect that. My mind and eyes are open, and I am definitely eager to go to Tucson in this headspace. I'm leaning into strength, individuality, discovery, and building new partnerships with like-minded people and retailers.
